September 2010

The Autumn months have arrived so what better way to warm your cockles than coming indoors to one of London's new pop-up venues: The Silver Bullet in Finsbury Park. Valkyrie, Ben, Will and Attila are all frantically gathering nuts, fruit and eating carb-laden foods to ensure the warmest of calorie-fueled hugs that they can muster. The atmosphere will be so warm that you'll want to put off hibernation for at least another week or two we guarantee.

Mannequin SocialExperience Bee Stings as you've never seen them before: stripped down, laid bare and intimate. Let Valkyrie's succulent coos glide over you like a waterfall of kisses. Feel a quiver of desire as Will parts his legs to pluck and scrape at his wooden instrument. See Ben ham-fistedly hammer away on his organ.

Basically, Attila's on holiday and we're doing a gig anyway. Will's on cello. See you there, OK?

Bee Stings hard at workBee Stings announce the imminent arrival of their second album. Recorded over 12 months at their studio in Hackney, it includes old favourites Gold Digger and A Little Life, eight new tracks and a murderous take on a jazz standard. It will be available as a free download from this site from Monday 28 September, which also happens to be Brigitte Bardot's birthday. Coincidence?

Bee Stings will be celebrating with a launch party and gig in Stoke Newington on Friday 2nd October (which is Sting's birthday, but that really is a coincidence). The party is free for everyone on our mailing list, so sign up here to get your invite.

Bee Stings at Cross Kings, Sat 26th

Kings are hardly ever cross, except for King Kong, and Jonathan King, probably. However, that's no reason to have anything but the upmost faith in the forthcoming Bee Stings gig at Cross Kings (near Kings Cross) on Saturday 26 January. The night is hosted by the endearingly obnoxious Turning Worm, and features live music from Winners, some other band (TBC), Bride and Groom (who you may recognise) commandeering the decks and your friendly Stings rounding off the night. And it's quite a pleasant venue too - see! Yes, yes, it's late January and you're skint. Boo hoo. Get down to the venue and put some high-octane happiness into your life.

So do we! What's more, you, us and everyone else gets a chance to do exactly that on Sunday 2nd December at the BoxBot all-dayer. Tour de Force

Bee Stings at Plan B, BrixtonA big thanks to everyone who made it to Bee Stings' shows in November. The band made lots of new friends, met some great bands, drove 1,190 miles, survived two breakdowns, got one parking ticket, lost one hat, had 16 arguments, appeared on the radio four times, got drunk six times, met an excitable puppy and a spider-eating cat and had a thoroughly ace time. You'll find photographic evidence of their exploits on our Gallery page. BB Stings still misses his hat, though. If you know its whereabouts please get in touch.

New Line Up

AttilaOn 30th July BW Stings was sadly taken from Bee Stings' tender bosom by the winds of time, leaving the band with the unenviable task of finding a new drummer to fill his shoes. Salvation eventually came in the form of Attila, a man whose sole purpose in life is to beat the crap out of resonant objects. Read his biography here.

Bee Stings have also been recording with a dizzying assortment of brass and string players, vocalists and anyone else they've happened to meet on their travels. Sneak previews of Bee Stings' debut album are currently available on the Listen page.

Synth Heaven/Cable Hell

This week Bee Stings have been busying themselves with an assortment of weird dusty old magnificent sounding synths kindly supplied by the folk from Schmoof. The Roland System 100m deserves a special mention, offering as it does the combined pleasures of classic analogue synthesis and nineteenth century telephone exchanges. The band are delighted to announce that their basslines are now sounding raunchier than ever before, and have decided that the 100m is a fair swap for the strap-on they loaned to Schmoof four years ago and haven't seen since.

Research and Destroy

Work on Bee Stings' debut album has now entered a critical phase. With 14 songs sculpted to perfection, all that remains is to record the vocals, drop in some guitar and bass parts, gather up a plentiful supply of strange synths, stringed and bellow-powered instruments and mix them all together using arcane Soviet military technology. Get a sneak preview of the results on our Listen page.

The Audio Mangle

Recording of Bee Stings' debut album continues with increased vigour after early signs suggest that it is going to be very good indeed. There are 13 songs currently destined for inclusion, including live favourites Most, Apollo 69 and Ninjas vs Aliens, plus six brand new songs. One of these was premiered at February's gig in Cargo, although its working title - Weevil Knievel - will probably change at some point.

New Stuff to Click

Check out the band biography and special interest pages here.

Valkyrie Goes Solo

To anyone who's heard something eerily similiar to Bee Stings' rock anthem Most on Radio 1 recently, no you're not imagining it. The band's singer Valkyrie has teamed up with breakbeat producer ils on the track Cherish, which uses the same vocals as Most (currently available for download on our Listen page). Cherish appears on ils's brand new album, Bohemia, and is due for single release soon.

6th March 2005

On The Record

Recording of Bee Stings' debut album is well and truly underway. The band spent a week recording drums at their studio and in a local church, putting them in good stead for the Armageddon Wall of Death drum sound they're hoping to achieve. These recordings will spend the next few weeks in the blender before work commences on laying down guitar, bass and vocals.

We Need Your Help

Arguments have already broken out over the title of the album - so far, everyone in the band hates everyone else's suggestions. The only exception is that BB Stings really likes Billy 's Vagina In Your Hands, but it turns out that it wasn't a serious suggestion and BWB doesn't actually like it himself. Have you got any better ideas? Email your suggestions to mail@beestings.co.uk.

Bee Stings play the Marquee

Bee Stings are proud to announce that their next live date will be at the brand new location of the legendary Marquee Club on Tuesday 31st August. Running since 1958 in Oxford Street, Wardour Street and Charing Cross Road, the venue has seen the biggest names in rock tread its boards. After a brief period in the Angel, its new owners are bringing the Marquee back to the heart of Soho.

The venue officially opens on 1st September, but Bee Stings will be playing a private showcase gig to friends and industry members the day before. This is a strictly guestlist only gig, but if you feel you've been rudely denied an invite please drop us an email at mail@beestings.co.uk.

Drowned Rats

Bee Stings rock the Water Rats TheatreBee Stings thank all those who came to the Water Rats on Friday to help make it possibly the most fun and definitely the most sweaty gig they’ve done to date. The band are now looking forward to working through the stockpile of song ideas they’ve built up over the last couple of months, including one about rubber fetishes and the criminal justice system. Come back soon for more photos from the gig and news of future appointments with your loving, caring Bee Stings.

The Power of Flowers

A dishevelled party-goer discovers Sunday mornings aren't for himLast Sunday's filming of the video for Half Human was generally considered a success, although BB Stings got a bit sunburnt, and if anyone spots three large balloons with a video camera dangling underneath please could they get in touch as soon as possible. A week of video editing beckons as Bee Stings hope to premiere their latest visual adventure at their performance at the Water Rats on Friday.

Foreign News

Big Willy Bee rides the ringIn a brief break from songwriting and squabbling, BB Stings and Billy Byers Jr spent last week in Turkey. When not plotting schemes against Valkyrie and BW Stings, they found Turkish pop music interesting but a little morose, and enjoyed feeding chicken drumsticks to turtles. They also hatched a plan to open a chain of bars called Jonny Pisshead to cater for English tourists throughout the world.
